What Happens During a Lip Blushing Appointment, Step by Step

If you've booked in for lip blushing, there's a good chance you're picturing the result and skipping right past the part where you actually have to sit in the chair for it. Fair enough. But knowing what's coming makes the whole thing far less nerve wracking, so let's walk through exactly what happens from the moment you sit down to the moment you leave. Lip blushing is a form of cosmetic tattooing that adds a soft wash of colour to your lips, using pigment placed into the skin rather than makeup sitting on top of it. We talk colour and shape before anything else

Before any tattooing starts, we sit down and talk about what you actually want. This is where I look at your natural lip colour, your skin tone, and what you're hoping to get out of it, whether that's just evening things out or adding a bit more definition and colour. I'll be honest with you here. If a shade or shape isn't going to suit you, I'll say so. The skin is opened before the numbing goes on

This bit surprises a lot of people, because it's the opposite of what you'd expect. I start the first light pass over your lips before any numbing cream goes on. That first pass is what opens the skin just slightly, and it's actually what allows the numbing cream to absorb properly once it's applied. If numbing went on first, it would mostly just sit on the surface and wouldn't do nearly as much for your comfort. So the order is opening first, then numbing, and it works.

Numbing is topped up throughout the appointment

Once that numbing cream is on, we let it sit and do its job before moving further into the appointment. From there, I reapply it as we go, so if you start to feel anything, we simply add more rather than pushing through discomfort. Most people find the appointment far more comfortable than they expected, and being able to keep topping up the numbing is a big part of why.

The actual tattooing part

With the area numbed, I work in slow, careful passes to build up the colour, checking in with you regularly and adjusting as we go rather than rushing to get it done in one hit. This is a genuinely collaborative part of the appointment. You'll see the colour building gradually, and we can talk through how it's looking before we finish up. It typically takes a couple of hours all up, between the consultation, the numbing, and the tattooing itself.

What your lips look like when you leave

Straight after your appointment, your lips will usually look noticeably darker and more saturated than the final result, and they might feel a little tender or swollen, similar to how your lips feel after a lot of sun exposure. This is completely normal and settles down over the following days as they heal. The colour will soften and lighten as it heals, landing somewhere much closer to the natural, everyday shade you talked about in your consultation.
