Lash Lift vs Extensions: What's Actually the Difference?

You've probably scrolled past both lash lifts and lash extensions on your feed, and if you're anything like most of the women who sit in my chair at Central Clinic in Wanaka, you're not entirely sure what separates one from the other. I get asked this almost every week. They both make your lashes look longer and more open, but how they get you there, and what your life looks like afterward, is completely different.

What a Lash Lift Actually Does

A lash lift works with the lashes you already have. I use a gentle solution to curl your natural lashes from the root, so they sit up and out instead of pointing down or curling under. Add a tint, and you've got dark, lifted lashes without a scrap of mascara.

It's low maintenance in the truest sense, because there's nothing added and nothing to fill in. You wash your face, sleep on your side, rub your eyes if you want to. Your lashes are just yours, but better.

What Lash Extensions Actually Do

Extensions are a different approach entirely. Instead of enhancing what you've got, I attach individual synthetic lashes to each of your natural lashes, one by one. That means more length, more volume, and more control over the exact look you want, from soft and natural to full and dramatic.

The trade off is a bit more care. You'll need to keep them dry for the first day or two, avoid oil based products near your eyes, and come back for infills every few weeks as your natural lashes shed and take extensions with them.

The Real Differences

Cost, time, and upkeep are where these two treatments really part ways. A lash lift is a single appointment with results that last several weeks, no maintenance required in between. Extensions need regular infills to stay full, and the appointment itself takes longer, both for your first set and every top up after.

If your mornings are already a juggling act, a lift is the closer thing to set and forget. If you want more length or volume than your natural lashes can give you, extensions will get you there in a way a lift never will.

Which One Suits You

Honestly, it comes down to what you're after. If you love your natural lash length but want them to look open and awake without mascara, a lift will do exactly that. If you want a fuller, longer look regardless of what your natural lashes are doing, extensions are the better call.
