Does Lip Blushing Hurt? An Honest Answer
If you've been eyeing up lip blushing but keep putting off booking because you're worried it's going to hurt, you're not alone. It's one of the first questions almost everyone asks me, usually before they've even sat down properly. And I get it, anything with the word tattoo attached to your face sounds like it should hurt. So let's talk about what it actually feels like, honestly, without the sugar coating and without the scare tactics either.
What Is Lip Blushing, Anyway?
Lip blushing is a form of cosmetic tattooing where a fine needle deposits pigment into the very top layers of your lips. Instead of drawing on lip liner and lipstick every morning, you wake up with soft, natural colour and definition already there. It's not about changing your lip shape or going for a bold new colour. It's about enhancing what you've already got, so your lips look a little more finished without you having to do a thing.
So, Does It Actually Hurt?
Here's my honest answer. most clients describe it as more uncomfortable than painful. Lips are a sensitive area, there's no getting around that, but the sensation is usually more of a scratching or vibrating feeling than sharp pain. Everyone's threshold is different, so what feels like nothing to one client might feel more noticeable to the next. I've never had a client tell me it was unbearable, and plenty are pleasantly surprised by how manageable it actually is.
How We Keep You Comfortable
This is the part that tends to surprise people. I actually start the treatment before any numbing cream goes on. I begin the initial outline first, which opens the skin just slightly, and that's what allows the numbing cream to properly absorb and do its job once it's applied. If we numbed first, before the skin had been opened at all, the cream wouldn't sink in the same way, and you'd actually feel more, not less.
From there, I reapply numbing cream throughout your appointment, so as soon as you start to feel anything, we top it up again. Most clients find the first few minutes are the most noticeable, and then it settles into something pretty easy to sit through.
What You Might Feel Instead of Pain
A lot of clients tell me it feels more like pressure or a dull buzzing than actual pain, especially once the numbing has properly kicked in. Some describe it as similar to a small elastic band flicking gently against the lip. It's not exactly comfortable, but it's a long way from what people picture when they hear the words lip tattoo.
Why Everyone's Experience Is a Little Different
Pain tolerance is personal, and a few things can affect how you experience the appointment, like where you're at in your menstrual cycle, how tired or run down you are, or whether you're someone who's naturally more sensitive around your mouth. None of that means lip blushing isn't right for you. It just means it's worth being upfront with me beforehand, so I can do everything I can to keep you comfortable.
If you've been putting off booking because you're worried about the pain, I promise it's rarely as bad as people imagine. Got a question about what it might feel like for you specifically? Send me a message and let's chat it through before you book, at Central Clinic Wanaka.
